Wareham toddler found unresponsive in pond on Tuesday dies
A three-year-old Wareham girl has died at Boston Children's Hospital after she was found unresponsive in an East Wareham pond on Tuesday.
Wareham Police say that Alyvia Navarro, who suffers from autism, wandered from the care of her grandmother in Lakeside Trailer Park, which abuts Dick's Pond.
Alyvia passed away at 3:50 p.m. on Wednesday, Wareham Police Lt. Kevin Walsh confirmed.
"Further investigation of the death will be conducted by the State Medical Examiner's Office in addition to the investigation being conducted by Wareham and Mass. State Police," Walsh said.
Valerie Navarro, Alyvia's grandmother, called police after the toddler had been missing for 25 minutes on Tuesday afternoon, police said.
"An immediate and extensive search of the area was initiated," police said.
The South Eastern Massachusetts Law Enforcement Council Search and Rescue team responded, as did the Onset Fire Department, Wareham EMS, and the Wareham Harbormaster Department.
Alyvia was found in the pond by the Harbormaster Department about an hour later. She was approximately 25 yards from the shore, "in an unresponsive condition," police said.
"The child was immediately brought to shore, where paramedics administered life-saving medical attention and transported her to Tobey Hospital," police said.
Alyvia was then transferred to Boston Children's Hospital via medical helicopter, police said.
