Wareham on track to acquire more conservation land

Feb 3, 2016

Just four months later, Wareham’s almost halfway to obtaining another 44 acres of conservation land.

On Tuesday, Allen Decker, Director of Land Protection for the Buzzards Bay Coalition, was on hand at a meeting of the Wareham Board of Selectmen to provide an update on efforts to acquire funding to buy the “Fearing Hill West” property on Fearing Hill Road.

In the fall, Town Meeting approved the Conservation Committee and Buzzards Bay Coalitions’ efforts to raise the $675,000 needed to purchase the property.

“It’s just another opportunity for us to help the town locate funding to make this acquisition,” said Decker, noting that at least 45 percent of the funds had already been acquired.

Decker said the property is adjacent to the present Fearing Hill Conservation Area, and could potentially provide a place for a second, unpaved parking area as well as more conservation land to be available for public use.

“We’re asking for support for putting an application in on behalf of the Conservation Commission,” said Decker, who said grants of $258,000 and $300,000 had already been obtained. “We’re well on the way to helping the town with this.”

Committee member Peter Teitelbaum said the requests were in accordance with what town meeting had already approved of, and that no changes needed to be made to the initial request.

“Nothing’s changed,” he said.

Currently, there are 115 acres of conservation area in the area, with the town-owned Douglas S. Westgate Conservation Area and River Walk opening in 2013, which borders the Fearing Hill Conservation area, also owned by the town. It features four cranberry bogs surrounded by walking trails.

Decker said he would provide updates on the the most recent grant application, which if acquired would provide the rest of the funding needed for the town to purchase the land.

“We look forward to keeping you apprised on the progress of this project,” added Decker.

Selectmen approved of the measure unanimously, with only member Alan Slavin abstaining from a vote via video conferencing.
