Wareham on track for safe summer
The town met new lifeguards, as well as members of the Wareham Police Bike Patrol, as part of an introduction of the Safe Summer 2010 task force at the Board of Selectmen meeting Tuesday.
Safe Summer 2010 is a collaboration of Town Administrator Mark Andrews, several town departments, and the community.
In addition to lifeguards and the bike patrol, the task force includes a Police foot patrol, and volunteers to man parking lots at beaches.
"This has really been a team effort and a team approach," said Director of Inspectional Services Myles Burke, who coordinated the lifeguard program along with Andrews.
The lifeguards are being trained at the Gleason Family YMCA. Wareham EMS is also working with the team, and helping to replace some of the older lifeguarding equipment through a loan program with the EMS.
The town's beaches have been without lifeguards for about four years.
To get the Bike Patrol started, Wareham Police obtained 10 new police-specific bicycles with grant funding. The bikes have stronger frames than consumer-level bikes, and come equipped with a light with a siren. Officers go through a three-day, 24-hour training course to prepare for bike patrol, said Officer Brian Whalen.
New this year to beach parking lots, parking attendant volunteers will wear hats and bright-orange vests so that they can be easily identified by drivers, said volunteer coordinator Marcia Griswold. The volunteers are part of Wareham's Property Tax Work-off Program for seniors.
"I think we're going to be able to welcome everyone down to the beach for a very safe summer," Burke said.
