Wareham Vikings fall to Dighton-Rehoboth
The undefeated Wareham Vikings fell to the undefeated Dighton-Rehoboth Falcons in an aggressive game on Friday that had Wareham's offense fighting for every yard.
The loss effectively ended Wareham's playoff run,"Not officially but realistically," said Coach Dan Nault. "We’d have to win two and Dighton-Rehoboth would have to lose two."
The game was a showdown between two fierce teams.
"We lost to a very good football team," said Nault, noting: "We didn’t lose to a team we shouldn’t have."
Dighton-Rehoboth's brick-wall defense held off Wareham's explosive offense for a 21-8 victory.
The first quarter ended in a stalemate with two goose eggs on the scoreboard.
The Falcons put up 14 points in the second quarter, establishing a lead that they didn't give up.
Wareham fought back in the third, with a touchdown by senior Charles Tranfaglia. With a two-point conversion, Wareham put eight points on the board.
But the Falcons scored their final touchdown in the fourth, cementing their first-place position in the South Coast Conference.
The system used to determine how teams make it to the playoffs will be changing next year, but had it been in place this year, Wareham would likely be heading to post-season play.
"Under the new system, if we finished the season at 9-2, we’d go to the playoffs," Nault explained. "We wouldn’t have to win our conference."
Nault said that Wareham would almost certainly have fared better this year if the new system were in place.
"If this was a year later, we’d be seeded third or fourth in our division," he added.
