Wareham without a town accountant again

Nov 5, 2012

Wareham is without a town accountant again, Interim Town Administrator Derek Sullivan confirmed Monday.

Noting that he could not comment on personnel matters, Sullivan said, “I can confirm that as of Friday, November 2, at 4:30 p.m., Mr. Kudish was no longer employed by the Town of Wareham.”

Although the position has not yet been posted, at Tuesday's Board of Selectmen meeting, Sullivan said, "the plan is to post the position immediately."

In the mean time, assistant Town Accountant Judith Lauzon will temporarily fill the position, and extra staff has been brought in to work on setting the tax rate and closing the books for the current fiscal year.

The deadline to set the tax rate passed November 1. It is unclear how that will affect the town.

Brian Kudish was hired by the town last May at a salary of $81,571. Prior to the appointment of Kudish, Wareham’s finances were overseen by Bay State Municipal Accounting Firm.

Kudish was Wareham’s first permanent Town Accountant since April of 2011, when Elizabeth Zaleski was fired after a $919,000 discrepancy was found in the town’s books. It was discovered that no money was missing, and that the discrepancy was due to incorrect entries in the town ledger. Zaleski settled with the town for $42,500, and was reinstated, but agreed to resign immediately. She now works as town accountant for Raynham.
