Wareham woman celebrates 103rd birthday

Mar 19, 2018

For Evelyn Plenty the secret to a long life is simple: “You’ve got to keep moving! I’m still kicking, but not too high.”

She would know. On March 14, Plenty celebrated her 103rd birthday at Wareham Healthcare, a skilled nursing facility located at 50 Indian Neck Road.

In her life, Plenty has been around for World Wars I and II, the  Great Depression, the civil rights movement, the moon landing and the election of the country’s first black president.

At 103 years old, Plenty, who is originally from Allston, is still sharp, though a little hard of hearing. She moved to Wareham Healthcare in August 2017.

At her celebration, many gathered for music and food. Margaret Phillips, the facility’s director of admissions, said Plenty is well liked among staff and residents.

“She is so sweet,” said Philips. “Everyone loves her.”

Plenty graduated from Brighton High School and immediately went to work. She worked a variety of jobs, but one of her favorites was in a dress shop where she made alterations.

As for advice to anyone who hopes to reach their 100s, Plenty says: “Keep stepping high.”
