Wareham woman charged with unemployment fraud

A West Wareham woman is charged with unemployment fraud and larceny after she allegedly received $13,000 in unemployment benefits while she was employed full-time.

Kristene Vaccaro, 42, allegedly worked between August 2009 and April 2010 and failed to disclose her employment status to the state during that time, according to Attorney General Martha Coakley's office.

"For each of the 28 weeks that Vaccaro collected unemployment benefits, she allegedly notified the [state] that she was not working, but that she was able to work and was available to work," according to Coakley's office.

Coakley's office said that Vaccaro collected fraudulent unemployment benefits totaling nearly $13,000 while earning more than $19,000 from her job.

Vaccaro is scheduled to be arraigned in Boston Municipal Court on October 15.

Vaccaro was one of four people charged in connection with collecting a combined total of more than $83,000 in unemployment benefits while working, Coakley's office said. Also charged are Karla Ulebor, 52, of Milton, James Lydon, Jr., 47, of Cohasset, and Marlene Pierre, 44, of Lynn.

The cases are the result of investigations referred to the Attorney General's office by the state's Executive Office of Labor and Workforce Development's Department of Unemployment Assistance.

"Unemployment fraud puts a strain on the system," Coakley said. "The detection, investigation, and prosecution of these crimes are important to deter fraud and return these funds back to the Commonwealth."
