Wareham's Jovahn Thomas surpasses 1,000 points

Wareham High senior Jovahn Thomas isn’t one for emotional displays, says boys basketball Coach Steve Faniel. Tuesday night proved to be an exception.

That’s when Thomas picked up his 1,000th career point, prompting his team and everyone else in the high school gym to erupt in cheers.

“He’s an excellent, unassuming player, a great scorer and just plays the game well,” said Faniel. “To see him smile like that after hitting his 1,000th point was great to see.”

The milestone basket was a three-point shot that Thomas, a forward, made with less than a minute played in the first quarter. Officials paused the game while his teammates celebrated on the court. Thomas was then given a plaque commemorating the occasion.

Thomas joined the team as a freshman having played basketball starting in middle school. He entered Tuesday’s game three points shy of 1,000. Faniel said he wanted Thomas to hit the mark early on so the team could focus on the game, which ended up being a 77-48 win over rival Fairhaven.

The first attempt to get Thomas the ball ended in a turnover, but the next possession put the ball in his hands, then the hoop.

“It was amazing, it felt really good,” said Thomas.

The team is now a resurgent 5-3 after securing a string of consecutive victories following a slow 0-3 start to the season. Faniel said Thomas has been a key part of that success.

“I’ve watched him go from someone that just made baskets to a well-rounded player. He rebounds, moves the ball well and has become an important team player,” said Faniel.
