Wareham's 'Summer of Celebration' could receive $25,000 in state funding

Jun 28, 2013

Wareham's Summer of Celebration may get a big boost from state funding if the Legislature approves a budget amendment that earmarks $25,000 for the 2014 events.

The summer of 2014 is a big one for the town. It marks the 275th anniversary of the incorporation of the town and the 200th anniversary of the British attack on Wareham by the HMS Nimrod warship.

A committee has formed to raise money for the events, which will include reenactments, parades, fireworks, and more. Organizers are aiming to raise $75,000 to $100,000.

"We're pretty excited," said Claire Smith, member of the Summer of Celebration 2014 Committee and town Moderator. "If we can get this [$25,000], it will be a tremendous boost."

On Thursday, June 27, State Senator Marc Pacheco (D-Taunton) said the Senate approved an amendment to its supplemental budget that paved the way for the Summer of Celebration Committee to receive the funds.

Next, the supplemental budget will head to a legislative committee for review.

"The coming year marks several significant milestones for the Town of Wareham," Pacheco said. "This earmark is a small token recognizing the important contributions Wareham residents have made and will continue to make to our Commonwealth, now and into the future."

Smith said the committee is appreciative of the measure.

"The Wareham Summer of Celebration Committee gratefully appreciates all of Senator Pacheco's efforts to make this happen," she said.

State Representative Susan Williams Gifford (R-Wareham) says she has stressed the importance of the funding with her colleagues.

"I am very pleased that [Senator Pacheco's] amendment for this funding was adopted in the Senate version of the 2013 supplemental budget. Our effort will now turn to the House and Senate members of the conference committee to ensure this earmark stays in the final version of that budget," Gifford said. "I have already expressed to the House Republican leadership team that this is an absolute priority for us and will be following the process very closely."

The Summer of Celebration Committee will continue to hold fundraising events throughout the year. A June yard sale recently brought in $1,300.
