A warm day for Scoops

Sep 28, 2015

The Spinney branch of the Wareham Free Library once again received a sweet boost with another ice cream fundraiser, this time hosted by Guido's.

The Onset ice cream parlor held a Scoops for Spinney fundraiser from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday, donating $2 for every ice cream to Friends of Wareham Free Library. Despite the fair weather, there was a low turnout, but the money raised will go towards operating costs of the Spinney branch of Wareham Free Library, located 259 Onset Ave.

“The Spinney building was built in 1895,” said Priscilla Porter, President of Friends of Wareham Library. “The original portion was a lending library, a book swap type of thing, until the second world war broke out. They were sending books to the troops, so there were no books and the library closed.”

Porter said following the 1950s was when the Town of Wareham began to think about refurbishing and restoring it. In recent years over $700,000 was raised. Remaining funds from that effort are what has kept the library in operation for the last three years. The Scoops for Spinney idea was a fundraiser started by Nana's Ice Cream and Candy during the time period of the restoration efforts.

“It's all been with the help of the people of Wareham, not grants,” Porter said.

The Spinney branch is open on Mondays and Wednesdays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
