Water betterments and other blunders

Jan 25, 2012

To the Editor:

Talk about disingenuous and unprincipled. Look at the way water betterments are assessed in Wareham. Take the last water line installed in the County Road area. Approximately 471 housing "units" are being charged. Of these units, at least 100 do not exist or will never be built. They exist in the minds of the Water Superintendent and his minion commissioners. Approximately 400 units have not connected to the water line, but are being charged a water betterment. To add insult to injury, the Town of Wareham collects the betterments for this private company and says you have to pay the betterment before you can pay your taxes.

Next, we have the not-so-transparent Wareham Town Goverment. Accounting firm Powers and Sullivan still can't find where the $700,000+ went. Who is in charge of Inspectional Services? Who is still not certified by the state, but being paid $80,000+? Where did the money come from to pay for improper firing of Lt. Bliss ($220,000), Bob Bilss in Accounting ($30,000), Dave Simmons at the sewer plant ($70,000), Accountant Elizabeth Zaleski ($42,000 so she wouldn't tell the taxpayers what really happened in the accounting office)? How about the $70,000 computer audit that turned up nothing? The library lawsuits that completely vindicated the trustees, with the town paying $40,000 for attorney fees? That's it, we'll get the leaderhsip team to straighton everything out. When will the town hire a CEDA Director, a Council on Aging Director and a permanent Town accountant rather than a firm?

Wake up Wareham. There is a common denominator in all of the above.
