Winds heavy as 2018's first storm arrives

Jan 4, 2018

After a day of preparation, Wareham residents and officials are staring down the year’s first major storm, which has the potential to bring high winds and possibly power outages.

Winds picked up and rain fell early Thursday as the temperature was at 37 degrees in the morning.

In a press release issued by the Town of Wareham, the town may receive 5 to 10 inches of snow, “depending on how the storm tracks.”

Ahead of the storm, a parking ban was issued in Wareham until further notice.

“Please stay off the roads as much as possible to keep from impeding salting, sanding and snow removal operations. This will help keep the streets safe when Friday’s extreme cold sets in,” according to the release.

The forecast for Friday includes a high temperature of 13 degrees and a low of -2.

Town Administrator Derek Sullivan said at this time neither the state or the Red Cross has opened warming centers.

“We’re taking our lead from them,” he said, adding that a Wareham warming center will open if the weather becomes severe enough.

Wareham Public Schools, the Wareham Boys & Girls Club and Gleason Family YMCA classes have all been cancelled for Thursday.
