Worrell family wins award for fight against cancer
The Worrell family is the recipient of an award given to those who have made a mark in Massachusetts' fight against cancer.
The family was recognized as one of the Massachusetts General Cancer Center’s ‘One Hundred’. The organization is an awareness and fundraising initiative that celebrates 100 community members and groups who inspire others to take action to beat cancer.
Cindy Worrell passed away in January 2016 from non-Hodgkin lymphoma, after a 12-year battle and multiple relapses with the disease. But even while she was alive, the Worrell family volunteered their time and raised money for various cancer causes, including the Mass General Marathon Team and the Run of Hope, which supports children with cancer.
Additionally, every Christmas, the family brought gifts to the pediatric oncology patients. They have also been cheerleaders and sponsors of the Pan-Mass Challenge, a Massachusetts-wide bike ride against cancer, since 2003.
“During her ordeal, Cindy never lost her hope and good cheer, always soliciting help for others and continuing to give of herself,” one nominator said.
“The Worrell Family has been helping to care for Cindy over these past many years, but they have never not asked what else they can do for our patients,” says Howard Weinstein, MD, chief of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology at MGHfC. “They have inspired my staff and represent the best of the best in human kindness.”
