Wrestlers to spar Saturday to benefit ballers

Last year, longtime Wareham Junior Basketball Association (JBA) coach Joe Hathaway took a group of some of the top sixth grade girls from the league and formed a traveling team. That team ended up taking home the championship for a league at the Kingston Sports Complex.

With the success of that team, he decided to bring both a sixth grade team and a seventh grade team back this year, but he wanted to figure out a way to alleviate costs for the girls’ parents.

As an avid wrestling fan, he saw an opportunity in having some of the entertainers from Top Rope Promotions, several of whom have been involved with World Wrestling Federation and professional wrestling organizations, come to town to host an event to benefit the teams. That event is scheduled for this Saturday at Wareham Middle School at 7 p.m.

“I’m a huge wrestling fan, and I go to a lot of the events,” said Hathaway. “Last year, the parents had to pay out of their own pockets. I thought a fundraiser would be a good idea.”

At Saturday’s event, there will be seven different bouts, including a heavyweight championship match between Franky Vain and “Devils Reject” Brandon Webb. Also appearing will be The Ladies Man, Craig Costa, and Doink the Clown, all of whom Hathaway said were especially good at interacting with members of the audience.

“I like how they handle the kids—they’re good with them,” said Hathaway. “They come out and talk to them and take pictures and sign autographs. They’re always out and about, talking to the kids and stuff.”

Hathaway also said that each of his players would be volunteering at the event.

“The girls are ready,” he said.

Tickets for the event are $15 and can be purchased in advance at Sinners and Saints Tattoos at 37 Depot St. For more information, call (508) 933-4887 or go to www.facebook.com/topropepromotions. Doors open at 6 p.m.
