Wrong-way driver arrested for OUI, other charges
State Police arrested a Buzzards Bay man for drunk driving and other offenses Friday night after his vehicle struck another vehicle while traveling the wrong way on Route 495.
No injuries were reported in the accident, which occurred in Middleborough. James Burgess, 39, was subsequently arrested in Wareham.
According to State Trooper Bill Langmead, Burgess been traveling south on the northbound side of Route 495 in the area of Exit 3 when State Police were notified that a wrong-way vehicle had struck another vehicle in the Middleborough area.
Trooper Robert Rose was first on the scene, where he reported observing Burgess traveling toward him in the wrong direction in the area where Route 495 becomes Route 25. Rose reported that, when he attempted to stop Burgess, the Buzzards Bay man took a U-turn onto the other side of the highway before pulling over.
There, Rose observed several empty Budweiser “lime-a-rita” containers in the vehicle, as well as an open container, which was apparently being consumed, according to Langmead.
Langmead said Burgess failed a field sobriety test and is being charged with operating under the influence of alcohol, reckless operation of a motor vehicle, leaving the scene of an accident, driving the wrong way down a state highway, and driving with an open container. He was also issued marked lanes violations and other state highway violations.
