YMCA puts a twist on story time
Though there were tacos to be eaten and teddy bears and toys to be played with, at least one youngster was more interested in hearing a good story or two.
“He hasn't even eaten his food yet,” said Anne Cox of Wareham, who brought her grandson Alexander Cox, 5, to the Gleason Family YMCA’s ‘Teddy Bears and Tacos’ story time Saturday afternoon.
The event, which was held for the first time ever, put a new spin on the traditional story time theme through the food, stuffed animals, and more.
“He loves it,” said Cox of her grandson, who looked on attentively as the YMCA’s Cathy Longfield and Wareham Middle School Honors Society volunteer Alana Nicoletti read several stories to the dozen-or-so youngsters gathered in the Y's day care room.
“It’s something fun and different,” said YMCA Child Care Director Lyndsay Parnigoni.
Youngster Caleb Ellis, 7, of Wareham, chose to read his own book prior to joining the others.
“It’s about snakes,” he said.
“It gets people outside of their houses on a cold day,” added JoAnn Watson, a former full-time Y employee who now sits on the board of directors. “It’s a fun, family event.”
Parnigoni said funds raised from admission will go toward the Y’s “annual campaign,” which helps back things like swim lessons and camp membership for children in need and financial aid for adults.
“This way, everyone has an opportunity,” she said.
