YMCA to host open house for "summer home"

May 25, 2010

The Gleason Family YMCA will host an open house for potential summer campers on June 12 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Offering traditional camp with arts and crafts and nature walks, as well as numerous specialty camps, the YMCA's Camp Nep-In-Nae has something for everyone.

"[Camp] is just an awesome place to be," said Camp Director Donna Lake said.

Appropriately named, Nep-In-Nae stands for "summer home."

"It's a big family here," Lake said.

The YMCA is currently accepting sign-ups for both traditional and specialty camps, which start on June 28. Camps run for one week and cost $173 per week for members and $195 per week for non-members. Financial assistance is available, and no child is turned away for inability to pay, Lake said.

All campers learn about the YMCA's core values: caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility, while building self-esteem and self-confidence, Lake said.

"You've got to let yourself get out of that box," Lake said. "And have a good time. That's what it's all about."

Traditional camp is offered for children ages 5 and up and features activities such as archery, crafts, sports, games, dance, and daily swimming lessons. Themed weeks, including Native American, spirit, superhero, summer safari, and friendship are planned, with activities supporting each theme.

The YMCA is adding several new specialty camps to its 2010 docket, including karate, volleyball, and aqua sports, as well as a half-day tennis camp. It also offers cheerleading, skateboarding, drama, adventure, and several sports camps. Starting ages for specialty camps vary.

All camps include recreational swimming time. Campers will be able to use the YMCA's new outdoor pool when it opens on July 19.

Camps run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Extended care for children is available at an additional cost. The Gleason Family YMCA is accredited by the American Camp Association and licensed by the state and local Board of Health.
