Judith Wilson Sullivan, 73

Judith Wilson Sullivan (Judy), 73, died peacefully in her sleep at home on June 9, with her family at her side. The cause of death was pancreatic cancer.

Judy is survived by her husband of 48 years, Dr. Joseph Sullivan, and her sons: Paul of Fort Lauderdale, FL; Daniel (Hillary) of Des Moines, IA; and George of Redondo Beach, CA. She is also survived by her grandchildren Wilson, Lillian, and Timothy of Des Moines, IA, her sister Jane (Walter) of Dallas, TX, her brother George (Renee) of Gainesville, FL, and numerous nephews and nieces.

Judy was predeceased by her father, George Wilson, and her mother Alice Grassi Wilson.

Judy was born in Middleboro and grew up in Wareham. She attended Regis College in Weston, and graduated in 1961 with a B.A. in chemistry. She then taught high school chemistry in Norton from 1961 until 1964.

In the fall of 1964, she began a master’s degree program in chemistry at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. During her second week in Philadelphia, she met an intern from Philadelphia General Hospital. They were married in July 1965 after she received her master’s degree.

Judy and Joseph moved with their one-year old son, Paul, to Naples in 1968. In addition to raising three children, she enjoyed being involved in community organizations. She was a founding member of the Collier County Medical Society Alliance. She served two terms as president and remained active in the Scholarship Committee until her recent illness.

Judy had a lifelong interest in education. She served on the advisory board of St. Ann’s School and was later asked to be a member of the School Board of the Diocese of Venice, where she served from 2007 to 2013.

Judy had a parallel interest in Collier County Catholic Charities. She was on the board for many years. Later she served on the Board of Directors for Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Venice. She was the first layperson to be chosen to chair the Diocesan Board, a position she held from 1993 to 1996. Judy was one of the founding members of the Emerald Ball Committee in 1985. The Emerald Ball is now the main fundraiser for local Catholic Charities. She was presented with the Centennial Medal in 2011 by the President of Catholic Charities USA for her contributions to these endeavors.

A visitation will be held in St. Ann church, 475 9th Ave. S., Naples, FL on June 13 from 5 to 8 p.m. A funeral Mass will be held at St. Ann Church Friday, June 14 at 11 a.m. Private entombment services will be held Friday afternoon.
