Gatemen vs. Green Monster: College kids knock 'em out of Fenway

Jul 8, 2013

When the Wareham Gatemen took the field at Fenway Park last week, they were all bent on making a good impression on the big league scouts who came to watch them. One player even managed to knock home runs over the notorious Green Monster.

The Monster is the highest wall in a Major League baseball field, and begs right-handed batters to try to get one over it.

Chris Chinea of Louisiana State University knocked three over the Monster and got the most home runs of any Gatemen. Practicing at Fenway is one of the things the Southern California native was looking forward to when he headed east to play for the Gatemen.

“Coming up here, I was excited to hit at Fenway Park,” said Chinea. “I just went out there and had fun.”

The catcher says that Fenway is well known by baseball fans all over the country.

“It’s very well known. I’m a Yankees fan, so I know about the rivalry,” Chinea said, but noted: “I don’t care what team is playing, I just love to watch baseball.”

Two other Gatemen also homered.

Trevor Podratz of Hawaii University hit two home runs but believes he could have hit more.

“I made too many bad swings trying,” said Podratz. “You put a good swing on it and you can hit it out of any park.”

Podratz says that hitting home runs was great, but just being able to take the field at one of the oldest ballparks in the country was an amazing experience on its own.

“It felt like a treat, that’s for sure,” said Podratz. “Everyone’s goal here is to play on a big league field.”

A local boy got in on the action too. Plymouth native Matt Walsh, who attends Franklin Pierce College, hit one home run.

Plenty of Cape Cod Baseball League alumni have gone on to play in the majors, so the Fenway jaunt was good practice: Any one of the boys may have the opportunity to face the Green Monster professionally in a couple of years.
