Police arrest fugitive accused of indecent assault on minor
Wareham Police Detectives arrested Roberto Vargas, 48, of 3132 Cranberry Highway on Wednesday, June 2. Vargas has been on the run from Brockton police since November of 2001 when he failed to appear in Brockton District Court on a charge of indecent assault and battery on a child under 14 years old.
Wareham Police Public Information Officer Bill Fihlman said that detectives received information that Vargas was currently working and living in the Wareham area. He was located at a local business where he was working as a landscaper. He has been living in a local trailer park at 3132 Cranberry Highway.
Vargas was arrested without incident and transported to Wareham 4th District Court on Wednesday for arraignment. He is currently being held without bail at Plymouth County House of Correction awaiting a future court appearance.
The charge carries a penalty of between two-and-a-half and ten years in prison.
