Wareham's Summer of Celebration to get $25,000 in state funds after all
The state House of Representatives and Senate have each overridden Governor Deval Patrick's veto of $25,000 in funding for Wareham's Summer of Celebration in 2014, paving the way for the town to receive the money after all.
"We are now working with the town to make sure they're able to access the funds that have been authorized," said state Senator Marc Pacheco (D-Taunton).
The summer of 2014 marks the 275th anniversary of the incorporation of the town and the 200th anniversary of the British attack on Wareham by the HMS Nimrod warship.
Pacheco submitted an amendment to the Senate's supplemental budget in June that earmarked $25,000 for the celebration commemorating the events.
The budget, including the money for Wareham, was approved by a joint legislative committee before making its way to the governor's desk. Patrick disapproved the effort, along with other funding that he deemed "non-essential," in signing the $125 million budget in mid-July.
But last week, the state House of Representatives overrode Patrick's veto, as did the Senate.
Pacheco says the money should be available to the town shortly.
"It will be a big help," said Claire Smith, member of the the Summer of Celebration 2014 Committee, charged with raising money for the event, and town Moderator.
Reenactments, parades, and fireworks are planned. Approximately $15,000 has been raised thus far, but organizers say anywhere from $75,000 to $100,000 is needed.
A Viking cruise to benefit the celebration will be held on Monday, August 26, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.
The cruise departs from the Town Pier in Onset. Tickets cost $15 and include light refreshments. Music will be provided by DJ Jimmy Britto.
For tickets, contact Eleanor at 508-295-7727, or Rudy at 508-295-2374.
Other upcoming fundraisers include a cabaret with Onset resident Linda Calise on Sept. 15, and a Psychic Faire at the Wareham Lodge of Elks on Sept. 28.
