A VIDEO CHRISTMAS CARD FROM THE FIRST CONGREGATIONAL CHURCH WAREHAM

Dec 5, 2013

From the Gospel according to Luke, chapter 2 verses 8 through 14:

“8 In that region there were shepherds living in the fields, keeping watch over their flock by night.   9 Then an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified.   10 But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid; for see—I am bringing you good news of great joy for all the people:  11 to you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is the Messiah, the Lord.  12 This will be a sign for you: you will find a child wrapped in bands of cloth and lying in a manger.”   13  And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host, praising God and saying, 14  “Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth, peace, goodwill among people"

One year when I was in high school, a group of us neighborhood kids decided to go out Christmas caroling.  I'm not sure whose idea it was.   We were all more or less connected with a Christian church, but not the same one.  And lest we sound precocious, our main reason was that it sounded like fun.  As it turned out we also were given cookies and hot chocolate by people whose homes we visited.  This was especially heartwarming to me since I can't sing--at least not in tune.   At the time there was a woman who lived up the street who was a survivor of Auschwitz.   We wondered out loud whether a Jewish person would want us showing up at her door singing Christmas carols.  But in the end we went there and sang.  I don't remember what she said but she was very touched that we came.  In spite of our differences in age, and background, and religion and very bad actions of some Christians against Jews in Nazi Germany, she seemed glad we thought of her.  And I'm glad we went.

Reflecting on that now I think that reaching out in the spirit of Christ means reaching out to all.  In that spirit the First Congregational Church of Wareham wishes all a Merry Christmas, peace, and goodwill among people.
