Wareham man has eyes set on NFL

Dec 9, 2013

Wareham native Shea Allard has had a taste of what it's like to play professional football, and after getting cut from the Green Bay Packers training camp he decided he wasn't done with football.

The 24-four-year-old worked hard to get himself in what he says is the best shape of his life, and will is going all out to try and make it back to the NFL by doing all ten regional NFL combines - or tryouts - in nine weeks.

"I want a career in football and I figured if the scouts won't come to me I'll come to them," he said.  "If you really want something, go after it."

He's going after it with the help of an iron will, and the fundraising website gofundme.com. His goal is $10,000, and so far he's raised $4,725.

Allard says that if he makes it on to an NFL roster this year, he will match 100% of what was given to him in a donation to a charity for young athletes who need a leg up financially.

The money he raises will be put toward hotel rooms and flights as he travels around the country.

"There's a lot of athletes out there that can't afford certain things...I thought it would be a good way to give back," he says, adding that he knows what it's like to try to make it to the highest level of a sport when one doesn't have much money.

"A lot of times I would get invite to come check out  a college and we couldn't afford," the trip he said.

Allard played for Division 1 school Delaware University after graduating from Wareham High School in 2007. After he was cut from the Packers' training camp, he recommitted himself to the sport he loves despite having limited funds.

"When you come from a family without much you're kind of left out to dry," says Allard.

"It's up to you to either go out to the combines or find an agent."

So, he's heading to the combines.

He'll be sharing his experience on video to give people an idea of just how tough it is to get to the NFL if you haven't been drafted. He'll be expected to perform at a high level at each combine, in the hopes of  being invited to the "super regional" combine in Detroit.

"The only thing that's going to start to be a grind is all the red eye flights," said Allard. "As far as performing, I'm not concerned."
