Updated: Wareham girls get win against Old Rochester
With a tie at the half and a one-point lead after three quarters, a win against Old Rochester Regional would be a battle for the Wareham girls basketball team.
However, Wareham outlasted ORR in the final quarter to win Friday's game, 51-43.
Coach Dave Brogioli was happy, and not just because it was a win.
"They beat us twice last year," Brogioli said. "I'm ecstatic as a coach."
Again, this was not an easy win.
The score at the half was 24-24, and the Vikings led just 39-38 at the start of the fourth quarter.
"We were not shooting well," Brogioli said. "We did not seem engaged."
"We never really got into any kind of flow offensively," said Brogioli. "Defensively we played poor vs the pick and roll, until the fourth quarter where Breanna Miur, and Gina Mendes and Emily Bacchiocchi really picked it up."
In the fourth quarter, Wareham pulled away, but Brogioli wasn't completely satisfied with the game.
"We need to get a little tougher," Brogioli said. "We have enough talent, but need to play together."
"We need to start playing with more emotion and intensity to compete with the stronger teams in the conference, but we will take the win," said Brogioli. "We did some good things at times, but just need to give a more consistent effort."
Amber Filkins and Kia Fernandez both scored 11 points each, Breanna Miur had 9 points.
Wareham moves to 3-2 on the season, and 2-1 in conference play.
