Six Gatemen head to league all-star festivities

Six Gatemen are headed to Fenway Park on July 28 for the 48th annual Cape Cod Baseball League (CCBL) All-Star Game and festivities. Five will play in the game, and one will participate in the home-run derby.
The Gatemen are the most represented team on the West Division All-Stars. Only the Harwich Mariners, with seven players named to the East Division team, has more players selected.
It's the best summer league in the country, and you've been named one of the best of the best, it's an honor," said Tyler Bream, who is currently second in the league in RBIs and will be batting seventh and guarding third base in the game.
Zach Wilson will be batting third in the starting lineup. Although drafted as a third baseman, he has been playing left field for the Gatemen and will be patrolling right field in the all-star game.
Tony Caldwell, from Auburn University, was chosen as a reserve catcher for the game, and said he's reconsidering the plan to shave the mustache he has been growing since the team started pulling out of a losing-streak in mid-July.
This is the second time that right-handed pitcher Max Perlman, from Harvard, has been selected as a league all-star, previously appearing in the 2008 CCBL All-Star Game He said he was particularly honored this year not only because he gets to play in Fenway Park, but also because he missed both the 2009 collegiate and Cape-league season with an elbow injury.
First-year player Jed Bradley will also represent the Gatemen on the mound. The lefthander will be accompanied by his best friend and roommate at Georgia Tech (and this summer in Wareham) roommate Jake Davies.
Apparently Davies' reputation as a power-hitter precedes him, as he has not yet hit any home runs this season. To be fair, he noted that he has only had 14 at-bats because he was used as a relief pitcher for most of the early season. Now, however, Davies has been filling the designated-hitter spot in the lineup and has hit two ground-rule doubles. And he said he was excited to have the opportunity to encounter the Green Monster... even though he's a left-handed hitter from Georgia. (Most hitters have the best power on balls to the opposite field, so right-handed hitters do particularly well in Fenway).
"Opposite field 'smush,'" he said, using the team's nickname for hits. "I'm not a Red Sox fan, just a big fan of baseball."
Tickets for the July 28 game and festivities - which also includes the home-run derby and autograph sessions with the teams - are $10 for general admission and available at all ballparks or online. The Fenway gates open at 4:30 p.m., and the game begins at 7 p.m. The game will be televised live by the CBS College Sports Network.
