Seeking mini golf course, Kool Kone taps community for help
About 20 years ago, families could go to Kool Kone for ice cream after 18 holes of mini golf. Now, those same opportunities for a hole-in-one may be coming back to the store.
“I have parents who came here when they were kids, and they tell me how they used to go mini golfing,” said owner Tom Strom. “Now, I want to give these kids something to do on this end of town.”
Strom wants to purchase property behind the business, and construct a new mini golf course. The price tag for this project is $380,000.
While some business owners may take out a loan to do this, Strom is taking a more unique path – fundraising through the community. Strom set up an indiegogo.com page on Jan. 16 to help raise money.
The site works similarly to gofundme.com and other “crowdfunding” sites which fund projects through donations. The Pop Warner Wareham Tigers football team used this method to help raise $50,000 to travel to Florida for National Championships last year.
While the Tigers had just a few days to raise funds, Strom has set a deadline of March 1. Though he does not expect the entirety of funds to be raised by the community, he said every bit helps.
“If I can raise $380,000, I don’t have to pay the bank any interest on a loan and I can pay interest to those who donated,” said Strom.
As for the interest Strom will pay to donors, those who donate $50 will receive a $70 credit to Kool Kone. The more money one donates, the more the donor receives as “interest.” The top donation, $100, gets the donor a T-shirt, eight medium ice creams, four fish n’ chips, four large sundaes and six rounds of mini golf – valuing $130.
“I always want to help the community, and I hope they can help me,” said Strom.
In 2012, Kool Kone raised $25,000 for the family of 20-year-old Jordan Lopes, who died in a car accident that year. Lopes had worked at the restaurant since the age of 14.
Thus far, $310 have been raised on the site, and Strom has garnered support.
“He’s such a wonder,” said Michelle Fitzgerald, Wareham resident. “I hope the community will give back. It would make for such a nice family day. There’s nothing for kids to do over here.”
