Two-alarm house fire results in damage, no injuries
A two-alarm fire caused extensive damage to a home at 8 Broadmarsh Ave. Thursday evening.
No one was injured in the blaze, which is estimated to have caused between $50,000 and $60,000 in damage.
Wareham Fire Department inspector John Kelley said the fire appeared to have started with a "malfunction with the floor heater."
“It caught fire," Kelley said, "and ignited the wood timbers that were under the floor, extended along the bottom of the structure, and spread across the floor.”
The Fire Department was alerted at about 7:30 p.m.
The homeowner “did try to put it out with an extinguisher,” Kelley said.
Firefighters worked to extinguish the fire from beneath the floor. After an external check of the home, officials feared the fire was spreading and called in assistance from the Onset Fire Department.
“We started to see signs of deterioration based on the color of the smoke,” said Wareham Fire Chief Robert McDuffy. “We hit that second alarm to try and nip this thing before she took off on us.”
In addition, McDuffy said, “Firefighters get wet, and immediately their core temperature drops. So, we have to be cognizant of the welfare of our firefighters. So, we tend to step up our response.”
The fire department left the scene at 10:06 p.m. There were 18 firefighters on the scene with aid from the Onset and Carver fire departments.
