Another day, another snow

Feb 15, 2014

Remember what grass looks like? How about the sun? It seems like this winter season has swept these things away.

Luckily, though, Wareham has not been hit with a major storm which has knocked out power or caused any sort of mass chaos. This weekend's snowstorm appeared to be threatening, though.

As of 9:50 p.m. Saturday, there were 23 NSTAR customers without power in Wareham. At 10:45 a.m. Sunday, that number dropped to 12.

The situation is far worse on the cape, where outages soared well into the hundreds.

Onset Fire Department Acting Chief Raymond Goodwin said that even if the power does go, residents should have back in a short span of time.

"With the fast moving storm, power should be back by the time people wake up in the morning," Goodwin said.

"If you turn up your heat, you shouldn't even notice by the time the power comes back on," Goodwin added.

Goodwin also cautioned people to check their smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors as some use alternative heating methods.

"We had another CO scare after someone used a propane space heater," Goodwin said.

The main issue tonight, though, has been power lines.

"We've been chasing low hanging wires and downed wires," Goodwin said. "We're definitely busier than we've been."

"We've gotten four or five calls in the last hour for a tree on a wire or a downed wire," Assistant Wareham Fire Chief Patrick Haskell said on Saturday evening.

Haskell advised residents to not venture out until after the storm has passed.

The Wareham Police Department said there has been a few calls for cars sliding off the road.

Snow started around noon on Saturday, and fell steadily since. According to the National Weather Service, the town was expected to get 8 to 14 inches of snow. Over night, wind gusts were expected to reach 50 mph, making for blizzard conditions.

In response, the town has put in a parking ban until 6 p.m. on Sunday.

Wareham Public Schools has canceled all of its Saturday events, and the library has now canceled its mini-golf fundraiser in its entirety. The event will now be held on March 16.
