Fire at storage facility temporarily closes Route 6
A fire broke out at High and Dry Storage at 3160 Cranberry Highway around 5:15 p.m. on Feb. 18, causing extensive damage.
"We got a report from a passer-by that there was heavy smoke coming out of the building," Onset Fire Department acting chief Raymond Goodwin said. "We got on scene, and there was a lot of smoke pushing out of the eaves and other parts of the building."
"We had heavy fire in the front corner of the building, and our crews did a good job of knocking it down," Goodwin added.
Cranberry Highway was shut down for roughly a quarter mile due to the fire, which occurred across the street from the Lobster Pot Restaurant.
The building was unoccupied and there were no injuries involved.
"Knock on wood, none of our guys are injured," Goodwin said. "We just want to get all the debris out to make sure it's clear -- don't want to come back at 2 o'clock in the morning when it's cold."
There were five trucks on the scene and roughly 30 firefighters from Onset, Wareham and Bourne fire departments taking down sections of the building.Crews began returning at 6:30 p.m., and Goodwin anticipated everyone would return from the scene sometime shortly after 7 p.m.
Wareham Police Department was on scene to shut down Cranberry Highway.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
Wareham Week will update this story as more information becomes available.
