Update: Wareham Free Library may close

Feb 24, 2014

As it stands, Wareham might not have a public library on July 1.

Town Administrator Derek Sullivan presented a balanced budget draft Tuesday that included a scant $125,000 in funding for the library.

He said with this funding, Library Director Denise Medeiros would open try to open the Spinney branch one day a week, all staff would be reduced to half-time, and the library would still need "requests in outside sources of over $150,000."

Ultimately, Sullivan questioned whether the money would be better used somewhere else in the budget.

"I don't know if funding at this level is worth it for the town because I don't know what we're going to get for a service out of that," Sullivan said. "

Medeiros would like some funding in the budget presented to Town Meeting but understands every department in town is facing budgetary issues and it’s the taxpayers choice whether the library receives funding.

“We don’t want to have people choose the libraries or the schools, or the library or public safety. Our point is it’s important to keep as much of all these things as possible,” she said.

But Medeiros fears that residents are unaware the library is barely funded in the 2015 budget or think the town is merely threatening to close the library.

“I don’t know how you deal with people that are so disconnected that they are not going to pay attention until they see it happen,” she said.

Medeiros acknowledged the budget is a work in progress and said, “It’s not necessarily the final outcome, but it may be.”

Medeiros said the library has a gofundme.com page which was started by a resident in response to last year’s budget cuts and has raised over $600 since November.

“People have been very generous giving to the libraries, and obviously we want to keep encouraging that. But, we do need to have some town support,” she said. “They need the schools. They need the police. But, they need us, too.”
