Library accepts check to pay salaries
The Wareham Library Foundation presented a check for $70,000 to the Wareham Library Friday in support of the library and its employees. The money was pledged by the the Wareham Library Foundation last June and is being used to complete the fiscal year 2014 budget, ending on June 30.
"This will help us pay people to the end of June," said Library Director Denise Mederios.
The library is currently budgeted to receive $125,000 from the town for fiscal year 2015. The library received $295,000 in 2014 and $423,000 the year before that.
Currently, an override budget would bump up the library's funding for 2015 to $200,000.
Wareham Library Foundation Vice President and new member of the Board of Assessors Priscilla Porter was on hand along with Wareham Library Foundation Treasurer Bob Brousseau to present Mederios with the check.
When the money was pledged to the library last June, Wareham Library Foundation President Karen Mello said, "We understand the plight of the town and we want to be supportive But what we've done this year is just not sustainable," She added, "What we need to do is pull together and figure out a way forward."
Brousseau said the Wareham Library Foundation is willing to accept any money and people can donate either at the library or send checks to PO Box 485 East Wareham, 02538.
Brousseau said the foundation usually contributes about $20,000 a year in support of the library.
"But the foundation doesn't have unlimited money," he said. "It's a whole new ball game on July 1."
