'Another Star' celebrates area's diverse culture
A multicultural hub of sorts, Wareham is home to a wide-variety of people with varying ethnic backgrounds.
On Saturday, April 26, from 6 to 10 p.m., those backgrounds and subsequent cultures will be celebrated at the Wareham High School Auditorium for Another Star, a “multicultural extravaganza” featuring music, art, dance, and history from a list of entertainers both Wareham-based and from around Massachusetts, which will culminate in a speech from the president of Bridgewater State University, Dr. Dana Mohler-Faria.
“If we don’t write our history, it’s not going to be there,” said Rudy Santos, president of Wareham Summer of Celebration and co-chair for the event.
Santos said he was inspired to bring this type of event to Wareham after attending similar multicultural events at Cape Cod Community College and Bridgewater State.
“I talked to the people on Wareham Summer of Celebration,” said Santos, noting that he saw it as a way to inform people of multicultural issues and Cape Verdean issues that currently exist in Wareham. “That’s how this got started.”
The event itself will feature performances from traditional and contemporary act Positivity (featuring Wareham’s own Buddy Monteiro), Madeiran song-and-dance troupe Grupo Folclórico Madeirense do Clube SS Sacramento out of New Bedford, the Haley School Irish Step Dancers out of the South Shore and Greater Boston, Brockton-based band Pilon led by Tchico Evora, as well as performances by up-and-comers Aisling Peartree, Diamani Ferreira, and Mel Andrade.
Mohler-Faria is just the second president of an institution of higher education in the United States to be of Cape Verdean descent, as well as the first person of color to be president at Bridgewater. He also regularly visits Cape Verde, and as a lifelong resident of Southeastern Massachusetts, he is very familiar with the issues facing those who live here.
“This is going to be a great thing,” said Santos. “We’ve got first-class people coming.”
Not only is the event a great way to get people talking about the issues different cultures face in the area, but organizers are hopeful that it will help offset some of the costs of many of the upcoming free events associated with the Wareham Summer of Celebration.
“The whole idea is hopefully the start of a long-term process,” said Selectman Alan Slavin, who also serves on the events committee, “and it involves the entire community of Wareham.”
“We want to promote unity in the community,” added Kathy Andrews, who also serves on the committee.
Organizers are still looking for sponsors for the program book for the event. Anyone interested in sponsoring or those seeking more information should contact Dr. Aminah Fernandes Pilgrim at (508) 246-4270.
Tickets will be available at the door, and are $15 for adults and $10 for the elderly and also for students. Doors open at 5 p.m., and there will also be time reserved for networking following the event until 11 p.m.
