250 gallons of diesel spills into Onset Bay

Apr 27, 2014

Diesel fuel—about 250 gallons of it—reportedly leaked into Onset Bay Friday night at the Point Independence Yacht Club, said a press release provided by the Onset Fire Department.

According to the press release, the fuel came from a line that supplies a licensed/permitted fuel pump at the the club’s dock that is used to provide fuel to marine vessels.

It also said that several officials, including Deputy Fire Chief Jeffrey R. Osswald (who took command over the incident), were on hand to help contain the spill and prevent the spread of the fuel on both land and in the water.

Osswald notified Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection and the United States Coast Guard after the Onset Fire Department was called at around 9:15 p.m. following the spill.

On the scene were over 40 responders, including representatives of the Onset Fire Department, the Wareham Harbormaster Office, the Marion Fire Department, the Massachusetts Hazardous Materials Response Team and Massachusetts Department of Fire Services Rehabilitation Unit, according to the report.

As of Sunday, the Onset Fire Department was not able to be reached for comment, but Harbormaster Garry Buckminster, who was on scene Friday, was able to go into more detail.

Buckminster said that because of the direction of the wind, the spill was able to be contained to a small area, and that upon hearing of the spill, members of his department and the Onset Fire Department used several devices—including absorption booms and pads and deflection booms—in order to stop the spill from spreading out further into the bay.

“(The wind) kind of kept it contained,” said Buckminster, who noted that he and others were on site until about 2 a.m. Saturday morning, with members of the DEP remaining there even later.  “I don’t think much has gotten out from that location.”

The press release from the fire department also said that the club was responsible for the ongoing cleanup, and Buckminster said that Clean Harbors had been hired to do so and that they were still currently in the process of getting it cleaned up as of Sunday afternoon.

No one was available to comment after a phone call was made to the club.
