Former Patriots' lineman Light pushes new product at Wareham business

For years, three-time Super Bowl champion and three-time Pro Bowler Matt Light protected Tom Brady at the left tackle position for the New England Patriots. Now, he’s tackling a new venture as a co-owner of a new vodka called Keel, and he was at Wines and More at Wareham Crossing Friday afternoon promoting it.

Light said the company, which he and a business partner recently launched, is based out of Newport, Rhode Island.

“We’ll be around—we’re invested in the area,” he said of his involvement with Keel, which he described as lighter, more drinkable vodka than most of those on the market.

While Light was new to Wareham, he said that he was enjoying his abbreviated time there and that he was going to bring his son to the Atwood’s Motocross Track at some point.

“I love it down here,” he said. “It’s like the gateway to paradise. It’s where everyone wants to be.”

Light was friendly and interactive with those in attendance, quoting movies like “Stepbrothers” while tossing bean bags across the store to show off his Keel ‘cornhole’ set that the company had as a giveaway to follow the promotion.

Light said the set, which is used in the popular backyard game where participants throw small bean bags towards two angled boards with a hole in each, was a cross-promotion for his ‘Cornhole Commotion’ event at the Dana Farber Field House in Foxboro, which is a fundraiser for the Matt Light Foundation. Light said the charity hosts a free football camp every year in Ohio that’s sees over 4,500 children on average. The cornhole event is on June 14 and registration is $150 per team.

“It’s going to be in the Guinness Book of World Records for the most people playing cornhole at a time in one place,” he said, adding that it’s a family event that anyone can attend and participate in. “It’s kid oriented—the whole family can come. There’s a Kid’s Zone and everything.”

Colette Benoit and her daughter Nicole Correia, both of Wareham, were at Wines and More for the tasting, which included several other beverages available at the business, but said they were there to see Matt Light more than anything else.

“I love the Pats and I love Matt Light,” said Benoit.

“I loved it,” added Correia.
