Free tire recycling day

May 30, 2014

Any old tires just lying around can be brought into Used Tire Warehouse for free on Saturday June 28.

According to Used Tire Warehouse, tire stores and recycling centers usually charge a small fee for the disposal of old tires but on June 28 there will be no disposal fee at the warehouse. Limit to five tires per customer.

Illegally dumped tires are both a risk to human health and the environment. Tires are among the largest and most problematic sources of waste, according to Used Tire Warehouse.

Tires that can no longer be used are either recycled, or shredded at a nearby facility to produce tire derived fuel. This fuel produces the same amount of energy as oil and 25 percent more energy than coal.

Other uses for recycled tires include basketball courts, sneakers, playgrounds, asphalt and concrete.

Used tires will be collected on June 28 at Used Tire Warehouse at 4 Thatcher Lane in Wareham from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.
