Gateway Cougars take regional championship
For the first time in four years, a Gateway charter-based team has won a regional title in the Babe Ruth league
The 2014 Gateway Babe Ruth season recently came to a close, and for the Gateway Cougars it ended with a championship.
Gateway Babe Ruth had four teams represented in the Gateway regional league playoffs out of the 14 teams from all over Cape Cod that made the playoffs. The four teams were the Wareham Cubs, Gateway Cougars, and two Varsity teams: Gateway Renegades and Gateway Grizzlies.
The Gateway Cougars, who went 15-1 in the regular season defeated the Bourne Rangers and Falmouth John’s Team in the regional playoffs to become the regional champions of the Cape and Islands. Twenty-five teams from all over Southeastern Massachusetts competed for the title and the Gateway Cougars finished on top.
Head coaches Donnie Horton of Wareham and Dutch Maranhas of New Bedford lead the squad of 13 players from Old Rochester, Wareham and New Bedford to the regional title. The Cougars players are: Legend Fernandes, Josh Nawoicik, Jared Westgate, Cam Nataly, Miles Duarte, David Doucette, Glenn Catt III, Geoff Cardoza, Colin Horton, Ben Maranhas, Hassan Vargas and Manny Molina.
In the varsity division both Gateway teams made it to the playoffs. The Gateway Renegades were coached by Joe Lemiuex and finished with an 11-7 record while the Gateway Grizzlies were coached by Jim Kemlage and finished with a 15 -3 record.
The Renegades lost in the first round of playoffs to the Sandwich Breakers and the Grizzlies lost to the Sandwich Breakers in the second round. The Dennis/ Yarmouth Dolphins defeated the Sandwich Breakers in the varsity regional championships.
The Wareham Cubs made it to the regional playoffs but were defeated in the first round.
