Southcoast Urgent Care Center to open in Wareham Crossing Sept. 2

Aug 27, 2014

The Southcoast Hospital Group will open its newest Urgent Care Center in Wareham Crossing on September 2.

Filling the space between a scheduled doctor’s visit and the hospital emergency room, the center will provide immediate, non-emergency care on a walk-in basis.

It’s equipped to treat both adults and children six months and older for ailments and injuries that do not require emergency attention.

“The main reason we’re opening is to provide patients better and immediate access to healthcare,” said Dr. Paul Iannini, Physician in Chief of Medicine at Southcoast Health. “If they can’t get immediately get into their doctor’s office, it provides a venue for them to receive care in a convenient and timely manner. And I think its very conveniently located.”

At the center, no appointment or established Southcoast physician is needed. It will be staffed by a specialized team of physicians, nurses and medical assistants, and will offer a full array of services including on-site radiology and laboratory services, basic orthopedics, gynecologic and minor surgical treatments, as well as intravenous fluids and medications.

Common reasons for visiting urgent care include strains, sprains and fractures, infections, animal bites, skin conditions, burns, lacerations, casting, contusions, cold or flu symptoms, immunizations and vaccinations, and school and sports physicals.

“Any of those things that really aren't of life-threatening nature, this provides an alternative to receive care,” said Ianinni.

The center is the second of its kind to be opened by Southcoast, with a similar facility having opened in Fairhaven in August of last year.

“It’s going to have a great staff,” said Dr. Pamela Spatz, the medical director at the facility, “and we’ll try to make it prompt and convenient.”

“Facilities like this are really important for continuity of care,” she added, noting that the center is not a replacement for primary care physicians or emergency departments. “It’s for a lot of the more common problems.”

The Urgent Care Center in Wareham will be open seven days a week. Monday through Friday, it will be open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., and on Saturday and Sunday, it will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, visit www.southcoasturgentcare.org.
