Friday Night Lights: Vikings fall in season opener
The Wareham High School Vikings fell short in their first chance to improve on last year's 1-10 record, losing to Bishop Stang in the season opener, 42-26.
But it wasn't all bad for the home team.
"Compared to last year, it's leaps and bounds better," said Wareham head coach Dan Nault. "They're a young team and they played through it."
The Vikings led the game 12-7 after a three-yard rushing touchdown by Josh Onujiogu with just over five minutes remaining in the second quarter.
But after a quick score from Bishop Stang and a stalled Wareham drive, the Vikings punted and gave up a 70-yard punt return touchdown with just over 30 seconds remaining in the first half. Bishop Stang took a 22-12 lead into the locker room at halftime and never looked back.
While Nault was disappointed with the loss, he was pleased with some of his younger players, such as junior quarterback Stephen Toal and freshman Isaac Nascimento.
"It's only his 22nd day of high school football," Nault said of Nascimento.
The Vikings will have extra time to work out the kinks as they head into a bye week before their next game, Sept. 19 against Seekonk at home.
"It'll be good to have 10 days before the next one," said Nault.
