Southcoast Brain & Spine Center recognized for its clinical excellence
DARTMOUTH, Mass. — The Southcoast Brain & Spine Center, a part of Southcoast® Health, continues to garner national recognition from industry-leading publications.
U.S. News & World Report’s 25th edition of its “Best Hospitals” adult specialties rankings recently recognized Southcoast Health with a “High-Performing” designation in neurology and neurosurgery. Southcoast Health scored high marks for patient safety and key patient services, and was rated at the highest level for advanced technologies.
“I believe that the success of our center stems from the special melding of the most advanced medical and surgical treatments with a personal investment in the people of our community,” said Matthew Philips, MD, Medical Director of the Southcoast Brain & Spine Center.
Southcoast Health’s neurological services received national recognition last year when the Southcoast Brain & Spine Center was named among “100 Hospitals with Great Neurosurgery and Spine Programs” by Becker’s Hospital Review for 2013. The list recognizes 100 hospitals across the U.S. that offer outstanding spine and neurological care. In naming Southcoast Health to the list, Becker’s Hospital Review noted that its neurosurgery program was ranked 86th in the entire country by CareChex, an innovative medical quality rating system designed to assist providers and purchasers in evaluating the quality of inpatient care.
The Southcoast Brain & Spine Center is designated as a Blue Cross Blue Shield Center of Distinction based on best practices and quality of outcomes. It has also been named a five-star recipient for treatment of stroke by Healthgrades for three years in a row (2012-2014).
“I’m very pleased with the accolades that our neurology and neurosurgery departments have recently received,” said Richard Miller, MD, Physician-in-Chief of the Surgical Care Center at Southcoast. “These recognitions reaffirm externally what we have already known internally: our comprehensive brain and spine model provides excellent care to patients in our community. This care really begins with our clinicians. Without their dedication to patient-centered and high-quality care, none of these awards would be possible.”
The Southcoast Brain & Spine Center is home to world-class physicians, offering a full spectrum of surgical and non-surgical treatment options. The center uses the latest technology, such as the most advanced image-guided surgical navigation systems available and sophisticated neurodiagnostics labs run by specially-trained, nationally certified technicians. The center’s multidisciplinary care team uses a model of collaboration to ensure timely and appropriate care.
Additionally in the U.S. News & World Report’s “Best Hospitals” rankings, Charlton Memorial Hospital placed second out of 24 hospitals overall in the Providence, R.I., metropolitan area. In addition to neurology and neurosurgery, Charlton achieved “High-Performing” status in three additional specialties: Gastroenterology and GI Surgery; Geriatrics; and Pulmonary.
