Charlie Tacker hopeful newest film will make HBO's "Project Greenlight"
Charlie Tacker has acted with the likes of Christian Bale, Jennifer Lawrence, and Bradley Cooper and in films such “American Hustle,” but he’s hoping to get noticed by some Boston-born Hollywood heavyweights for one of his most recent projects.
“Whiskey Boys” is a short film created by husband and wife team Justin Plasse and Cate Carlson in which Tacker, 11, plays the lead role of Jax. The film follows Jax and three other boys in their attempt to steal and sample a forbidden bottle of whiskey.
Platte and Carlson submitted the flick, which was filmed in August, to Project Greenlight, a Ben Affleck and Matt Damon-produced HBO series that gives new, young, or first-time directors a chance to create a feature film with professional help.
“Whiskey Boys” has survived a field of approximately 11,000, and is currently sitting in the top 20 submissions.
“I’m hoping that we’ll make it to the top 10, and then I hope we make it to the top one,” said Tacker, who currently attends Wareham Middle School.
Tacker has been acting since he was four and has appeared in commercials, TV shows, and over 40 films. His mother Lisa Zierenberg said he’s made himself known around the Boston movie scene to the point where he gets called to audition for films regularly and gets regular work.
“At the very least, most people in the industry in Boston know who he is,” said Zierenberg, who is also his manager, or “mom-ager,” as she calls herself. “In the indie market, he’s probably the most sought after child actor.”
"Whiskey Boys," which was filmed in Middleboro, initially made the first round of cuts when the folks at Project Greenlight narrowed the field down to 200. From there, it made the top 20, and Tacker, Zierenberg, and the rest of the cast and crew are hoping to get enough fan votes to make it to the top 10.
Zierenberg said the film that gets the most votes will automatically move on, with nine other films to be selected by Affleck, Damon, and company.
Even if the film doesn’t get picked, she said it will get Tacker exposure that he hasn’t had yet, as most of the bigger films he has been in have seen him in more limited roles.
“As many votes as we can get would be great,” said Zierenberg. “I think we have a good chance.”
Besides appearing in “Whiskey Boys,” Tacker has been hard at work, acting in several other indie films this summer, as well as in a film called “Aimy in a Cage,” which they’re hoping will debut at the prestigious Sundance Film Festival. He also played a role in an upcoming movie called "Don Scarducci," which features Alec Baldwin and several members of the cast of NBC's popular sitcom "30 Rock."
Not only is Tacker an actor, but he also is a filmmaker, having made several films on his own with his Fuji camera, some of which have featured his niece, Hannah Langone, a seven-year-old aspiring actress. But currently, it’s his acting that’s taking him places he’s never been before, both physically and as an individual.
“I get to be different people in each film, and I get to meet different people in each film, and in every film, I get to play a whole ‘nother character,” said Tacker. “It’s pretty cool.”
