Four suspects in Wareham murder each held on $500,000 bail

Four suspects in the murder of 23-year-old Wareham resident Dwayne “Tuttie” Borges were ordered held on $500,000 bail each after appearing in Wareham District Court Thursday afternoon.

Plymouth County Lead Assistant District Attorney Keara Kelley described the suspects as celebrating as they ran from the Cumberland Farms on Main Street where the stabbing took place Wednesday just before noon. Kelley said two witnesses who were pumping gas at the nearby Hess station overheard at least two of the suspects shouting “we got him, we got him” and patting each other on the back and high-fiving as they fled.

The four suspects, Latroy Hairston, 19, Jared Frye, 19, Demetrius Goshen, 18, and Adrian Garcia, 20, all from Wareham, have been charged with assault with intent to murder. Kelley said police are still investigating the incident and further charges are expected. The original charges were filed while the victim was in critical condition but still alive.

Kelley said that, according to Borges’ girlfriend, Borges saw the four suspects inside prior to entering the store and told her to stay in the car while he went into the store.

She said the girlfriend then noticed a commotion inside the store and saw the four suspects run out. She then went inside to see Borges leaning over a cooler and bleeding profusely.

Borges was taken to Tobey Hospital where he was treated for six stab wounds — one to the upper abdomen, one to the lower abdomen, one near his chin, and three to the chest -- according to Kelley.

He was airlifted to Boston Medical Center, where he later succumbed to the injuries at approximately 4:30 p.m.

According to Kelley, all four suspects had blood on their hands when apprehended by police.

Kelley said a manager at Cumberland Farms was the first to report the incident after the five young men started scuffling. The manager said that when she announced that she was calling the police, the four suspects fled.

“It was clear from the (surveillance) video that all four were struggling with the victim,” said Kelley.

Police reported finding a knife in the shrubbery near 147 Main St. with a “dry red and brown substance” on it. According to Kelley, police also found a knife on the floor in a police vehicle in which Frye was transported. She said Frye told police that the knife was not his.

Police also found a black watch and a cell phone inside the store, as well as an ID belonging to Hairston, according to Kelley. She said Goshen yelled to police from inside a cruiser that he had lost his iPhone inside Cumberland Farms.

Kelley said police initially apprehended Hairston and Garcia on Indian Neck Road, and later were able to locate Frye and Garcia separately. She said both Frye and Garcia claimed to be coming from the Oakdale neighborhood off of Sandwich Road. Officers said both were sweating profusely.

Kelley said police claimed Garcia was eating a Slim Jim and had a small folding knife on him when he was apprehended.

According to Kelley, a red backpack was found in the area of 15 Mayflower Avenue, reportedly belonging to Frye, and a knife sheath was found near 147 Main St.

Kelley said that, when police questioned Garcia, he reported going to the store with the other three suspects, and admitted to having stolen two Slim Jims from the store. He reportedly claimed to have never seen the victim before, but said that Borges stole $20 from him inside the store.

Kelley said Garcia admitted charging at Borges and pushing him into the sandwich case, but claimed the knife he had on him never left his waistband.

She said that, when Hairston was questioned, he also claimed to have never seen Borges prior to the incident, but during the confrontation inside the store, he “bear-hugged” him and punched him.

Hairston also told police he heard Goshen say “we got him” as they fled the scene, and that he saw Goshen put something in the bushes near 147 Main St., according to Kelley.

Four different lawyers were at Wareham District Court representing the suspects, and all pleaded to have bail lowered due to the fact that no further charges had been lodged against the suspects.

According to Hairston’s lawyer, he was a star basketball player for four years at Wareham High School and he had no criminal record.

Frye’s lawyer said he was currently attending night school at the Wareham Cooperative School.

Garcia’s lawyer said he was a 2012 graduate of Brockton High School and had resided with his mother in Wareham before moving in with his aunt in Wareham four months ago.

Goshen’s lawyer said he had no previous criminal record.

A probable cause hearing for the four suspects will be held Nov. 12.
