Searching for old, smelly shoes

Sep 29, 2010

Sneakers are commonly pounded into pavement.  But usually they're being worn at the time. This Saturday at Decas School between 9 a.m. and noon, pound your sneakers into pavement in a different way.

Wareham High School junior Tara DiGiantomaso has organized a used-sneaker drive through the Nike Reuse-a-Shoe program, and she is collecting old shoes that will be transformed into basketball courts for economically depressed areas.

One of the top ten students at Wareham high school, Tara has also played soccer in Wareham since she was about 3-years old. She researched community service programs after becoming involved with the National Junior Honor Society, which has a community service requirement, and found the Nike program.

"It was a perfect fit for Tara," said her mother Laura. "Coming back and volunteering, paying it forward is important."

Last Saturday Tara was at a booth set up during the Wareham Youth Soccer games, handing out flyers about the upcoming drive.

Her mother, who has been volunteering with Wareham Youth Soccer for about as long as Tara has been playing, was at her side to help out. "It's all her...she won't tell you that though," Tara's mother said.

Tara   isn't stopping with this sneaker drive, though. Through Wareham High School's DECA program, she hopes to organize sneaker drives at multiple high-school sporting events. If this ambitious 16-year old makes it happen, there could be drives at football and basketball games as well.

"It takes community service to another level," said Laura.
