Election season has begun

Jan 29, 2015

Potential candidates for the April 7 election began pulling nomination papers on Jan. 12. In the two weeks since then 15 people have pulled papers, including five for the newly created Board of Sewer Commissioners.

After pulling nomination papers, people must return them with the requisite number of signatures in order to become candidates.

One three-year position on the Board of Selectmen is up for election in April. Incumbent Alan Slavin as well as resident Michael Frates have pulled papers for that race.

Two three-year School Committee seats are up for election. School Committee member Michael Flaherty has chosen not to seek re-election. Incumbent Geoff Swett has pulled papers, as well as residents Julianne Cummings and Judith Caporiccio.

The new Board of Sewer Commissioners will be a five-member unpaid board tasked with authority over sewer plans, policies, rates and other similar matters. The board consists of: one one-year seat, one two-year seat and one three-year seat for sewer users. The other two seats consist of a three-year term for a non-sewer user and a two-year term for an "at large" seat, which may or may not be a sewer user.

As of Jan. 28, Finance Committee members Marilyn Jordan and Dominic Cammarano; Capital Planning Committee member James Giberti; residents Susan Sweeney and Malcolm White had all pulled papers for Sewer Commissioner seats.

Incumbent Housing Authority member William Lockwood and resident Henry Fernandes have pulled papers for the one five-year Housing Authority seat.

Incumbents John Donahue and Steven Curry have both pulled papers for the two open three-year seats on the Board of Assessors. Incumbent Deputy Moderator Joseph Ashley has pulled papers for that position.

The deadline for pulling nomination papers is Friday, Feb. 13 at 5 p.m. Because Town Hall is not open on Fridays, nomination papers will be made available at the police station only on Feb. 13. Endorsed papers must be returned to the Board of Registrars for certification by 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 17.
