Snow end in sight

Town prepares for more (and more) snow.

With more snow expected for Thursday night and blizzard conditions expected over the weekend, Wareham continues to deal with snow removal and other related issues.

Still, Town Administrator Derek Sullivan said the town is being proactive prior to the impending storms.

“We’ve spoken to (A.D. Makepeace and other cranberry growers) ahead of time to secure loaders and equipment and they are ready, willing, and able,” said Sullivan at Tuesday evening’s Selectmen meeting.

“(We) can’t thank everybody (that’s lent the town equipment) enough,” added Selectmen Chair Alan Slavin. “They understand the problem. It’s not like it’s free -- they charge us -- but the rates are fair and they’re willing to step up.”

After the blizzard in late January left over two feet of snow in town, the town was forced to borrow equipment and hire outside contractors to help Municipal Maintenance with snow removal. Wareham Public Schools also had to cancel classes on Monday, Feb. 9 and Tuesday, Feb. 10 because of more snow, although most of the roads in town were cleared by Tuesday afternoon.

Sullivan said that people will be able to tell which plows are contracted by the town because they will have reflective blue stickers that say "hired" on the back left-hand side of the truck.

A parking ban was also issued for all of Monday, February 9 and up until noon on Tuesday, February 10.

“If we get another 12 inches of snow, I have no idea where we’re going to put it,” said Slavin.
