Mexican restaurant to open, Zen Grill closes at Wareham Crossing

Feb 25, 2015

Out with the old and in with the new.

That's the story at Wareham Crossing, where one restaurant closed its doors last week and another will be moving in next door, filling in a four-and-a-half year vacancy.

Zen Asian Grill at Wareham Crossing closed last Tuesday, Feb. 17. WS Development General Manager Bill Hamilton was unable to provide details of why Zen closed down, only saying, "Zen and WS Development decided to part ways.”

WS Development is the retail development firm that owns Wareham Crossing.

Hamilton said there are currently no plans for new tenants at the location.

A representatives for Zen said he could not comment on the situation.

Next door to Zen is a space that has been vacant since Friendly's Express closed in October of 2011. That space will soon be occupied by Casa Cancun, a family style Mexican restaurant. Owners/operators Ezequiel and Gloria Sandoval along with their business partners Jesus and Yadira Ruleas went before Selectmen Tuesday night to obtain the food and liquor licenses for their new restaurant.

The Sandovals, who are originally from Mexico, said they plan to offer authentic, homemade Mexican food at their restaurant. They also own the Cancun restaurant in Kingston.

"We're hoping to open by the end of March if everything goes well," Ezequiel Sandoval said.

Selectmen unanimously approved their food and liquor licenses, with the condition that if they plan to serve alcohol on their patio outside, they must build a railing and have a staff member outside when patrons are drinking outside.

Sandoval said he was looking for a spot in between the restaurants he and the Ruleases own in Franklin and Kingston and Wareham turned out to be a good fit.

"We heard there are good cranberries here so we want to make good margaritas with tequila and cranberries," Jesus Ruleas joked after the meeting.
