Big cat in the hat: Decas Elementary celebrates Dr. Seuss
Dr. Seuss isn't just for the kids.
In honor of the famous author and illustrator's birthday, Decas Elementary Principal Donna Noonan went around to all the classes at the school dressed as the Cat in the Hat, Seuss's most famous character, reading to students and answering questions about Seuss and his books.
Noonan said she and teachers at the school honored Seuss as part of "Reading Across America," an annual reading and motivational initiative held each year on March 2.
"I went right through the school -- Kindergarten, first, and second grades," said Noonan, dressed in the signature tall white-and-red-striped hat and black cat suit.
Theodor Seuss Geisel, born in Springfield, Massachusetts, wrote 46 children's books, including "The Cat in the Hat" and "Green Eggs and Ham."
Students throughout the school were treated to videos about Seuss and his characters, and read through his books as well. Still, the visit from Noonan came as a bit of a shock to many.
"It's great, the surprised look on their faces, it's that same magic that Seuss brought. I love it," Noonan said.
