FARM CREW...If it ever stops snowing.

Mar 6, 2015

At the Sharing the Harvest Farm volunteer breakfast in February 2015, one of the messages was that growing food [in 2014 upwards of 82,000 pounds] has consequences, very good consequences.   So I will start at the end.  Major Parkhurst of the Salvation Army said that when the people that they serve hear that the produce has arrived from the Farm there are lines out the door of people waiting.   Ordinarily, if children come in they make them go get a parent to pick up the produce, but there is one little boy that is so happy to bring vegetables home to his mother that they let him do so.   The Sharing the Harvest Farm cookbook is used to teach people to cook with vegetables with which they might not be familiar, and as a consequence the people cook the recipes and bring the food  back to the Salvation Army.

The produce gets to food banks at places like the Salvation Army of  New Bedford and Fall River and  Damien’s Pantry in Wareham because of the sponsorship of the Southcoast YMCA, the efforts of Dan King, the head Farmer, 8100 hours of volunteer time, seeding, planting, picking and packing vegetables, and generous donations.

And the Farm Crew of the First Congregational Church Wareham gets there because we are moved to be God’s presence out in the community.

The Mission and Outreach committee hopes that you will join us for volunteer opportunities at the Farm this upcoming growing season.  The dates are:

April 18, 2015

May 30, 3015

June 20, 2015

July 25, 2015

August 15, 2015

September 12, 2015.

The hours for all dates are 9:00 AM to 12:00 Noon.

And stories should have a beginning, too.  Here it is:

“Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the least of those who are members of my family, you did it to me.”  Matthew 25:40.
