Wareham Community TV director steps down after six years

After spending six years as the first, and so far only, executive director of Wareham Community TV, Jay Heard has decided it’s time for a change.

Heard told the WCTV Board of Directors at the beginning of March that he would not seek to renew his contract, which runs out at the end of the month.

“I felt it was time for some fresh ideas and fresh blood in the organization,” said Heard, who has over 40 years of experience in television.

Heard became the first executive director of WCTV in 2009, when the organization started to expand in town.

Just before the first blizzard of the year at the end of January, Heard traveled to India for five weeks to think about what he wanted to do.

While Heard said he’s not sure what he’ll do next, he plans on staying involved with WCTV in some capacity.

“Jay has been incredible in his involvement and passion for WCTV,” said WCTV President John White. “It’s a shame to see him go. We tried to get him to stay, but ultimately it’s his decision.”

White said the WCTV Board of Directors met on Tuesday and appointed WCTV Technical Director Steve Ruiz as interim executive director beginning at the end of March.

White said the board has begun the search for a new executive director and that Ruiz is certainly a contender for the position.

Heard said he would recommend Ruiz and hopes he gets considered.

Looking back, Heard said he was proud of helping getting the organization up and running and the programs employees and members have produced over the years.

“It’s been a great experience for me. I’ve enjoyed working with everyone,” Heard said. “I think I’m leaving the place in good hands.”
