An egg-cellent Easter hunt in Onset

Apr 4, 2015

8,600 plastic eggs were all gone in 60 seconds.

That was the outcome Saturday at the annual Onset Village Pancake Breakfast and Easter Egg hunt, where hundreds of kids flocked to the Onset Bandshell to hunt for eggs, with breakfast at Marc Anthony's to follow.

At 11 a.m., the crowd of kids scooped up thousands of eggs in a matter of seconds. After sorting out their spoils, they were able to recycle the eggs for free cupcakes.

"It was great -- totally worth it," said Nicole Miceli, one of the event organizers.

Miceli said last year there, were only about 5,500 eggs filled with candy and goodies, so this year was a big step up. She did however, get plently of help.

The Wareham Young Adult program at the high school filled about half of the eggs for the egg hunt. The program's advisor, Megan Kashner, said the 14 kids in the club filled the eggs in four or five separate sessions.

"We just put some music on and got it done," she said.

Another high school program,  the Best Buddies program, was at the bandshell at 7:30 a.m. setting up all of the eggs.

The eggs themselves were purchased by Marc and John Salerno of Marc Anthony's, who also donated the $536 made from the pancake breakfast to the Wareham Young Adult program.

When asked if the number of eggs might crack 10,000 next year, Miceli said they'll do whatever it takes.

"We're ready to help out," Kashner said of her groups. "The kids love to see the work pay off."

The hundreds of kids who get to collect some extra Easter candy surely loved it, too.
