Wareham Recycling Center selling composters to raise funds
The Wareham Recycling Center is offering home composters for sale, as part of a fundraising effort for the center, which is badly in need of funds.
Recycling Coordinator Marylin Russell said the center needs to find other ways to keep itself running, as it is no longer funded by the town.
“The only way we make money is the nickel and dime bottle deposits from people,” Russell said. “When we sell [the composters], we have to take the money we made and buy more to keep the program running.”
Composting is the process of converting food and other kitchen and garden waste into fertilizer. The waste is naturally broken down by bacteria and other organisms over a period of weeks or months. Composters contain the waste as it is breaking down.
The recycling center is offering two composters for sale. One, the New Age Upright composter, is a bin that comes in two sizes, and are adjustable. The sizes available are 24 cubic feet or 30 cubic feet. They cost $65 and $70 respectively. Russell said the center has sold one of the smaller bin composters.
The other is a Wizard Jr. Tumbler, which comes in a 52-gallon size, and costs $90. The tumbler may be easier for some to use, because it can be turned to tumble the waste, rather than the waste having to be turned by hand.
Russell also said there will be a raffle for the composters on July 1. She said the center has sold about 30 tickets.
Russell said she applied for and was awarded a state grant of $1,250 for the center. She said the center spent about half the money on composters, and the other half on associated materials, such as running ads in the paper, printing flyers, and making signs for the center.
